A mentor in professional photography once told me, when you’re on assignment, always take one photo just for yourself. I’ve practiced the art of seeking these captures ever since. When I started traveling more with my photography and writing, my seeking drew me to the side of the road, peripheral vision sites with histories lesser told — the places with stories I wasn’t necessarily there to tell — or was I? I call them sideways sites, and these are their stories…and thus…mine, as well.
“What if it’s the there
and not the here
that I long for?
The wander
and not the wait,
the magic
in the lost feet
stumbling down
the faraway street
and the way the moon
never hangs
quite the same.”
- Tyler Knott Gregson, Chasers of the Light: Poems from the Typewriter Series
